WATERVILLE — Andrew Madlinger tied his careerhigh with 28 points, including six 3-pointers, as the Bowdoin College men’s basketball team won its second game over an in-state rival in as many nights, 82-64 over Colby on Saturday.

 
 
Coming off a buzzer-beater against Bates on Friday, the Polar Bears improved to 7-0, the best start in program history.

Colby fell to 4-3.

Madlinger started red-hot, making his first five shots, including four treys as Bowdoin shot 59.3 percent (16-for- 27) in the first half. Colby was able to hang around and trailed 38-30 at the break.

 
 
Colby appeared to catch a break when Bowdoin center John Swords picked up his third and fourth fouls in the opening minutes of the second half, but Bowdoin responded by extending its lead with a crucial 10-2 run to take a 58-38 lead with 13:12 to play. Colby never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Swords was outstanding for Bowdoin, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to post his fourth double-double of the season. He has scored in double digits in each of Bowdoin’s games this season and has hit 28 of his last 33 shots (.848) over the last three games. Keegan Pieri added 10 points for Bowdoin. Grant White had a game-high seven assists and Matt Mathias had six in the win.

 
 
Luke Westman was 7-for-9 from the field and 8-for-8 from the foul line on the way to 22 points and five assists for Colby.

Bowdoin finished the game with 54.8 percent (34- for-62) shooting from the field and 50 percent (9-for-18) from 3-point range. The Polar Bears had assists on 23 of their 34 field goals.

Colby was 14-for-15 from the foul line and only had eight turnovers in the game, but Bowdoin had a dominating 39-23 advantage on the boards.

On Friday, Mathias hit a running 30-footer just before the buzzer to give the Polar Bears a thrilling 74-71 win over Bates at Morrell Gymnasium.

The shot capped a wild final 12 seconds of regulation, as the teams combined for 10 points in a frantic finish.

Bowdoin carried a slim 37- 36 lead into halftime, and the game was tied at 52 apiece as it entered the final 10 minutes. The Bobcats used a quick spurt, sparked by a dunk from Malcolm Delpeche, to roll off an 11-2 surge that gave the visitors a commanding 65-56 lead with 4:10 to play.

The Polar Bears replied with an 11-1 run of their own, drawing to within a bucket following a running lay-in by Lucas Hausman with 1:50 remaining.

Mathias finished with four 3-pointers in the contest and ended with 14 points to go with five assists. Swords led Bowdoin with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Hausman and White also finished with 14 points each for the Polar Bears, who nailed 11 treys on the night.

Bates was led by its usual 1-2 combo of Mike Boornazian and Safford. Boornazian ended with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Safford had 22 points and three assists.

The Polar Bears will return to action with a road game on Tuesday night at Maine Maritime Academy.

Women’s basketball

Selena Lorrey tied a school record with six 3- pointers as Bowdoin dominated rival Colby in the second half of an 83-69 win Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears, who led by as many as 25 points in the second half, remain unbeaten at 7-0. The Mules fell to 3-6.

Lorrey scored a gamehigh 21 points off the bench for the Polar Bears. Her six trifectas tied the school record held by four different players — Jill Henrikson, Katie Bergeron, Julia Loonin and Jasmine Obhrai.

Shannon Brady dominated in the paint, scoring 17 points and adding 11 rebounds, while Sara Binkhorst added 13 and Megan Phelps had 10.

Desi Smith had 15 points off the bench to lead Colby.

Lorrey hit four of her 3- pointers in the opening period as the Polar Bears claimed a 39-34 edge at intermission. The Mules trimmed the Bowdoin lead to 43-41 following a Mia Diplock trey with 16:39 remaining in the half.

From there the Polar Bears dropped the hammer, rolling off an 18-0 run to put the contest out of reach. Lorrey nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the run and Brady dropped in five points.

Bowdoin held a dominating 48-32 edge on the glass and scored 26 second-chance points in the win. The Polar Bears’ 83 points were a season high and their 12 turnovers were a season-low.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin used a big second period to defeat visiting Tufts University, 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

Bowdoin split its weekend slate and improved to 5-3-1 (2-2-1 NESCAC), while dropping Tufts to 2-6-1 (1-4-1 NESCAC).

Trailing 1-0, the Polar Bears deposited their first goal of the game with five minutes remaining, capitalizing on a Harry Matheson power-play tally.

Bowdoin jumped ahead 2-1 just 2:32 into the second frame on a Danny Palumbo score.

At 2-2. Colin Downey answered for Bowdoin, scoring off a rebound of a McGinnis shot, and just 30 seconds later Tim Coffey scored on the rebound for a 4-3 Polar Bears lead. Matt Rubinoff and Connor Quinn each picked up an assist on the g0-ahead goal.

Jay Livermore, Downey, McGinnis and Rubinoff. added goals.

Messina had 43 saves in the win.

The Polar Bears visit the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday.

On Friday, Keith Veronesi scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Connecticut College defeated Bowdoin, 3-2, on Friday at Watson Arena.

Connecticut College collected its first win of the season to improve to 1-7 (1-4 NESCAC).

After Bowdoin goaltender Max Fenkell stopped a JC Cangelosi breakaway, the Polar Bears jumped on top as Coffey took a pass and scored for a 1-0 Bowdoin lead after a period.

Bowdoin took the 2-0 lead 6:12 into the second period, as Matt Sullivan netted his first career goal. Palumbo dished a pass from behind the net for Sullivan to onetime outside the crease.

Bowdoin held a slight 36- 35 edge in shots.

Women’s ice hockey

Bowdoin saw its threegame win streak snapped in a 5-0 setback to third-ranked Norwich University Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears fell to 3-3 while the Cadets improved to 8-1.

Tori Charron led the way for Norwich with two goals and two assists. Kaycie Anderson, Emily MacKinnon and Madison Gallagher also scored for the hosts.

Bowdoin was able to stay with Norwich in the opening period, falling behind 1-0 on Charron’s first goal of the day midway through the period.

Beth Findley made 22 saves in net for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears will return to action after break when they host a pair of non-conference matches against Manhattanville (Jan. 4) and St. Thomas (Jan. 5).

Bowdoin teams came away victorious in its opening meets of the 2013-14 season Saturday at Farley Field House.

Competing against instate schools Southern Maine, Maine-Farmington, St. Joseph’s and Colby, the Polar Bear women racked up 172 points to handily defeat the field, while the men’s team posted 143 points in a 30-point win over closest foe Southern Maine.

Among the several Bowdoin winners, senior Coby Horowitz posted the highlight — a school record in the two-mile run, with an astounding time of 9:03.04. The time broke the former record of 9:07.6 that was set by Douglas Ingersoll and had stood for 32 years.

Addison Carvajal led the way for the Bowdoin women, as she took both the high jump (5-0) and long jump (17-03) competitions. The Polar Bears had four winners on the track, including Samantha Copland in the 60-meter dash (8.18), Emily Clark in the 200 (26.57), Meghan Bellerose in the 600 (1:41.49) and Gillian Kramer in the 3,000 (11:23.46). Katharine Krupp won the triple jump (35-07) and Katherine Harmon claimed the weight throw (48-05). Bowdoin also claimedthe4x800relayina time of 10:25.74 (Skye Aresty, Alana Menendez, Carolyn Veilleux, Bellerose).

In the men’s meet, Bowdoin’s depth proved to be the difference. The Polar Bears had several winners in addition to Horowitz’s record-setting run. Christian Sleeper won the 800 (2:01.50), Guo Wei Wu took the 1,000 (2:46.34) and Parker Hayes took the 60 hurdles (9.43). In the field events, Benjamin Eisenberg won the high jump (6-0), Ben Woo Ching took the shot put (42-08) and Anthony Todesco won the weight throw (43-09).

Both teams will return to action on Jan. 11 as they host another invitational at Farley Field House beginning at noon.
