BRUNSWICK — Julia Champagne poured in 26 points and the Brunswick High School girls basketball team beat Cony 56-53 in season-opening Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference play on Friday.

It was the first Brunswick win over the Rams since the 2009-10 season.

Champagne chipped in with 14 rebounds, seven assists and three steals and was 5-of-6 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Lyse Henshaw chipped in with 15 points (4-for-4 at the line down the stretch) and Anna Dimick had eight points and 11 caroms.

Brunswick trailed 13-9 after one quarter, but forged into a 27-20 halftime lead.

“We just spread the ball around and played really good defense,” said Brunswick coach Sam Farrell. “And we owned the rebounding edge (43-32), especially in that second quarter … they had zero second-chance points.”

Brunswick also led 37-36 after three quarters and was 19 of 26 overall at the line.

The Rams were 12 of 16 at the line and were paced by Emily Quirion’s 26 points.

Brunswick (1-0) has another big game coming up as the Dragons host Edward Little on Tuesday.

Messalonskee outscored host Mt. Ararat 14-4 in the third quarter to pull away for a KVAC win at Topsham on Friday.

Mt. Ararat trailed 8-6 and 15-12 at the first two quarter breaks, but Messalonskee claimed a 29-16 lead through 24 minutes and held on as Mt. Ararat scored 15 fourth-quarter points.

Lindsey Cornelison paced Mt. Ararat (0-1 and slated to visit Oxford Hills on Tuesday) with 12 points, while Caitlin LaFountain chipped in nine.

Messalonskee (1-0) received a gamehigh 14 points from Kelsey Mayo and 12 from Kassaundra Michaud.

The visiting Cobras had three players score in double figures for a Mountain Valley Conference win at Wiscasset on Friday.

Emma Pluntke led Carrabec (1-0) with 11 points, while Hannah Atwood and Mickayla Willette each chipped in 10.

Carrabec started well, taking a 13-4 first-quarter lead. The Cobras led 23-14 at the half and 38-28 after three quarters.

“Carrabec used pressure in the first quarter to put early distance between the teams,” said Wiscasset coach Patrick Quinn. “There were several runs back and forth after that. We got as close as eight points in the fourth quarter.”

Briana Goud led the Wolverines (0-1 and slated to visit Hall-Dale tonight) with 15 points. Alecia Faulkingham added 10 points, with Miranda McIntire and Hanna Foye finishing with four each.

LISBON 38

Kelly Pomerleau had 23 points and Callie Greco added 19 as the visiting Saints opened with a MVC win over 0-1 Lisbon at Lisbon Falls on Friday.

St. Dom’s (1-0) posted quarterly leads of 11-3, 25-9 and 48-16.

Katelyn Fowler and Adrianna White led the Greyhounds with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Lisbon is slated to visit Winthrop today.

RANGELEY 50

Senior point guard Tori Letarte scored a game-high 19 points to lead Rangeley to a 50-30 triumph over Richmond in East-West Conference action Friday evening.

The Lakers (1-0) were also powered by Taylor Esty and Blayke Morin with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Sophomore forward Kelsea Anair tossed in a team-high six points for the Bobcats (0-1, scheduled to host Buckfield on Tuesday).

Julie Plummer added five points, and Haley Murphy, Autumn Acord and Morgan Harrington chipped in four points apiece.
