TORONTO — Carl Soderberg and Torey Krug scored second-period power-play goals and the Boston Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Sunday.

The Bruins were without Shawn Thornton, who was suspended pending a league hearing over his Saturday takedown of Pittsburgh’s Brooks Orpik, which put the Penguin in a hospital. Boston’s Loui Eriksson and Chris Kelly sat with injuries suffered against the Penguins.

The Leafs controlled the play early on and led 1-0 after the first on a goal by Peter Holland.

But the Bruins had a three-goal outburst in the second period, including a pair of power-play goals in a 93-second stretch.

Jay McClement also scored for Toronto.

Kevan Miller, Jarome Iginla and Patrice Bergeron also scored for Boston.

Speaking of Thornton, Boston Coach Claude Julien said prior to Sunday’s game, “Thorny did cross the line and some others did too. But sometimes you have to man up to those things and I think he did.”

Defensemen Adam McQuaid and Johnny Boychuk were sidelined with earlier injuries. The Bruins’ defensive issues were intensified Sunday when Dougie Hamilton exited after the first period after a collision with Leafs defenseman Carl Gunnarsson.

Boston’s starting goaltender Tuukka Rask was given the night off in favor of Chad Johnson. Jonathan Bernier started for Toronto.

CAPITALS 4, RANGERS 1: Jason Chimera, Steve Oleksy and Mikhail Grabovski scored second-period goals to power Washington to a win at New York.

WILD 3, SHARKS 1: Josh Harding made 37 saves in another strong home outing, and host Minnesota beat San Jose despite recording only 13 shots.

BLACKHAWKS 6, PANTHERS 2: Patrick Sharp had a goal and two assists, and host Chicago used its potent offense to win after starting goalie Corey Crawford left in the first period because of a lower-body injury. He was relieved by rookie Antti Raanta.

CANUCKS 3, AVALANCHE 1: Mike Santorelli scored two goals and added an assist at Vancouver won at home.

NOTES

FLYERS: Forward Vinny Lecavalier, who has missed the last three games, could miss a month because of a non-displaced fracture in his lower back.
