MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Bowdoin squash teams were shut out of the win column in a tough weekend trip to Middlebury College.
The Polar Bear men dropped a 8-1 decision to the Panthers before falling 9-0 to St. Lawrence. The women’s team fell 7-2 to Middlebury and were edged 5-4 by St. Lawrence. Both teams stand at 2-4 entering winter break.
Emily Simonton picked up a pair of wins to lead the Polar Bear women’s team, earning a 3-0 win in the Middlebury match and a 3-1 decision against St. Lawrence. Natalie LaPlant picked up a 3-2 win against the Panthers while Alden Drake (3-1), Chloe Polikoff (3-0) and Christiana Whitcomb (3-1) took home wins against the Saints.
Andrew Ward accounted for the lone Bowdoin point in action this weekend, earning a 3-2 victory at No. 4 against Middlebury.
The teams will return to action on Jan. 10 with home matches against Colby scheduled for 6 p.m.
On Friday, both Bowdoin teams fell to Bates in their home-openers at the Lubin Family Squash Center.
The Bobcats took a pair of 7-2 decisions in the twinbill.
Maxwell Bearse earned a 3-1 win at No. 5 for the Bowdoin men, while first-year Cyrus Nassikas picked up a 3-1 victory at No. 9.
On the women’s side, Michaela Martin won a hard-fought 3-1 victory at No. 3, with LaPlant earning a tidy 3-0 win at No. 9 for the Polar Bears.
The Bowdoin women currently stand 19th in the latest College Squash Association rankings, while the Polar Bear men rank 21st in the poll.
Swimming
Bowdoin closed out its first semester of intercollegiate competition at the MIT Invitational this weekend.
In a highly-competitive field, the Polar Bear men placed fifth of eight squads, while the women took a sixth-place finish among eight teams.
Freshman diver Christine Andersen highlighted the meet for the women’s team by placing sixth in the threemeter dive (252.50) andseventh in the one-meter dive (241.85). Other top-10 finishes for the women included Lela Garner’s eighth-place showing in the 400 IM (4:50.75), followed closely by Sarah Freshnock in 10th (4:51.69). Holly Rudel took eighth in the 1650 freestyle (18:54.31), while Sophia Walker took 10th in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.37).
The women’s 200 medley relay team of Rudel, Helen Newton, Mariah Reading and Walker took 6th in 1:51.69. Freshnock, Erin Houlihan, Bridget Killian and Walker also placed sixth in the 800 free relay (8:15.71).
On the men’s side, diver Tom Kramer was fifth in three-meter dive (273.15) and eighth in the one-meter (249.55). Josh Ellis was ninth in both the three-meter (250.70) and one-meter (247.85) competitions.
