From 1966-88 he enjoyed working for the University of Maine as a Cooperative Extension Service educator in Sagadahoc and Androscoggin counties. Charlie was well known to many families, farmers, and gardeners as well as town officials. He became a beacon for back-tothe landers searching for information and advice about organic farming. He often said, “They taught me much more than I taught them,” and “I never enjoyed gardening until I started hauling manure.” Charlie went all out to assist farmers, traditional or organic, small or large. He was instrumental in founding MOFGA.
He also played key roles in forming the Coastal Economic Development Corp., the Maine Small Farmers Association, Kennebec Valley Growers Cooperative, and the Central Maine Arts and Crafts Guild.
There will be no formal memorial gathering, but a private interment in summer. Please consider a donation to CHANS Home Health Care, 60 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011 or the charity of your choice.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
