BATH
Bath police said Thursday that the report of an attempted abduction of a 12-year-old boy was a hoax.
After conducting an extensive investigation into the report made by the boy, police said the alleged abduction attempt did not occur.
Bath police Lt. Robert Savary said investigators have interviewed the boy at length, and he has admitted that the story was made up.
At this time, the boy has not been charged with a crime but investigators continue to talk with the boy and his family. Savary issued a news release
Thursday that a boy was approached by a man driving a minivan near the 500 block of Middle Street at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.
The child described a gray or green van with a small antenna on the roof, and said the driver reached out and grabbed him, attempting to pull him into the van.
The Bath Police Department’s news release was widely reported in media throughout Maine, including The Times Record on Page A1 of Thursday’s editions.
