BANGOR – Bill Knight, a World War II Navy veteran whose volunteer work greeting soldiers at Bangor International Airport was featured in a documentary has died. He was 91.

Gov. Paul LePage said Knight died Wednesday at the Maine Veterans Home. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Knight was a member of the Bangor Troop Greeters, who gather at the airport to welcome soldiers as they return from oversees or to wish them well as they are deployed. He and two other greeters were featured in the 2009 documentary “The Way We Get By.”

LePage said Knight was proof that a simple handshake and saying thank you can inspire a nation.
