The Journal Tribune publishes obituaries in the print edition of the daily paper and weekend edition.

SUBMITTING OBITUARIES: Please send obituaries to: jtcommunity@journaltribune.com. If you do not hear from someone on the staff, please call to confirm that we have received an obituary at (207) 282-1535 to ensure the obituary is submitted by deadline.

Funeral homes need to provide obituaries by email. Handwritten obituaries being submitted by families may be brought to the office and will be typed by a staff member during regular office hours. Calling before bringing in an obituary to the office will help ensure a staff member is available upon arrival.

If you are a family member submitting an obituary, please be aware that we will have to confirm the death with a funeral home or cremation service. Please be prepared to provide the appropriate contact information.

DEADLINES: The Journal Tribune publishes daily, Monday through Saturday. The daily deadline ”“ with the exception of Monday and Saturday ”“ is 3 p.m. for the next day’s newspaper:

Death Notices

If the deceased lived within our coverage area ”“ York County ”“ at any point in his or her life, the family has the option of publishing a death notice free of charge.

A death notice includes: Full name, age, town/city of residence, connection to York County (if not a current resident), and date and place of death.

Obituaries

A family or funeral home may submit an obituary for any person, local or not, and it will be printed “as is.”

Obituaries can include, but are not limited to, the following information: Full name, age, place of residence at time of death, date and place of death, date and place of birth, parents’ names, education, work history, date of marriage, group affiliations, hobbies, people who preceded them in death, survivors, visiting hours, service and burial information, and memorial donations.

Obituaries can also include editorial commentary about how the person lived; and wording that resembles a eulogy. An obituary is only minimally altered to meet the newspaper’s style and Associated Press style (i.e. instead of Cambridge, Massachusetts it would read: Cambridge, Mass.), and to match the order listed above. Proofs can typically be provided before publication.

Fees are below.

PHOTOGRAPHS: The cost to print a photograph is $25 per photo, with up to two allowed.

Digital photographs should be in .jpg format and if the picture includes more than one person, please identify the deceased in the body of the email or in an attached note. Physical prints of photographs can also be dropped off at the Biddeford office the day before the obituary is to be published. In some cases when a photograph is too small, distasteful or the quality is too poor to reproduce on newsprint, we will not be able to publish the photo.

An image of an American flag can also be printed with a veteran’s obituary for a $3 charge.

CHARGES: The charge for an obituary is 59 cents per word with a minimum $15 charge. A charge of $25 will apply per photo, and a charge of $3 applies for a veteran’s flag.

An estimate of the charge for an obituary may be adjusted slightly due to style changes that would occur before publication.

BILLING: Pre-payment is required for funeral homes outside of the immediate area and obituaries submitted by families. We accept Visa or Mastercard and can take payment information over the phone. During office hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, obituary payments can be accepted in person at our Biddeford office. Personal checks and cash can be accepted at the office.

CORRECTIONS: If there is an error in an obituary that is the fault of the newspaper, we will republish the obituary at no additional charge. If the error is that of the family or funeral home, the standard charges ”“ as described above ”“ will apply for the reprint. When sending a correction, please send the obituary in its entirety with the correction included and include a note to let the editor know where the change has occurred.

COPIES: The Journal Tribune does not have the ability to email or fax copies of any obituary. If you would like to purchase copies of the paper, call 207-282-1535. Back issues of the paper may also be purchased at the Biddeford office.
