“Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts generated a lot of headlines in 2013, most of which had to do with the popular newswoman’s health.

At the close of the year, Roberts is opening up about her personal life, as she publicly acknowledged for the first time that she is gay.

In a Facebook message posted Sunday, Roberts wrote: “I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together. I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes for my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold.”

The New York Daily News reported that the Amber that Roberts referred to is Amber Laign, a licensed massage therapist, who has been in a relationship with Roberts in New York for over a decade.

Though Roberts has never publicly addressed her sexuality, it has not been a closely held secret among those who know her. She was selected by President Obama to conduct his 2012 interview in which he came out in favor of same-sex marriage.

On Monday, first lady Michelle Obama tweeted congratulations to Roberts, writing: “I am so happy for you and Amber! You continue to make us all proud.”

Roberts underwent a bone marrow transplant in late 2012 to treat the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome. Roberts’ post Sunday came on the one-year anniversary of her critical 100th day post-transplant, when she was given a clean bill of health.

Roberts returned to “GMA” in February of this year and has enjoyed much ratings success as the ABC morning show consistently surpassed the previous top dog, “Today,” in the ratings.
