“WAJMA (AN AFGHAN LOVE STORY),” directed by Barmak Akram. Afghanistan’s official submission to the 2014 Academy Awards is this tale of a young woman named Wajma (Wajma Bahar) who falls in love with a handsome waiter named Mustafa (Mustafa Habibi) and tests the limits of her country’s cultural boundaries and societal pressures. When Wajma discovers that she is pregnant, Mustafa hedges on his desire to be with her, and word of her dalliance begins to spread. The story’s focus shifts from a love affair to the intense interpersonal dynamics in Wajma’s household and the decision faced by her father (Hadjil Gul) to protect his family’s honor or to protect his daughter.
