BIDDEFORD (AP) — A Kohl’s department store built 11 year ago in Biddeford is sinking into the ground and will have to be razed.

City Codes Enforcement Officer Roby Fecteau says the building, which cost the retailer $3 million to build, has been sinking since it was built in 2003 because the wrong fill was used at the site.

He says the store was never in danger of collapsing.

Kohl’s plans to spend $2.8 million to build a smaller store near the original location. Officials say the old store will close next month, and the new store will reopen in the fall.
