The Northern New England Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services will host its winter social on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Salt Institute, 561 Congress St., Portland. The event will feature food, artwork and networking with marketers from the architecture, engineering and construction industries. Free beer and wine will be supplied by S.W. Historian Charles B. Doleac will discuss the 1713-14 treaty negotiations in Portsmouth, N.H. between the English and the “Eastern Indians” of the Maine coast in a program slated for Thursday, Jan. 23, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. The public is invited, and volunteers will serve refreshments. Doleac will discuss how the treaties have a direct connection with ideas concerning the rights of indigenous people that are in the headlines today. Doleac is an attorney who works as a New Hampshire Superior Court mediator and senior partner with the Portsmouth firm of Boynton, Waldron, Doleac, Woodman and Scott. As an Aspen Institute moderator, he has led dialogues on leadership, ethics and East/West comparative cultures. His study of the 1713 Treaty of Portsmouth grew out of his interest in law, ethics and diplomacy. The talk is sponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society. The Nubble Lighthouse Keepers Square Dance Club’s Snowflake Dance will be Sunday, Jan. 26 from 2-5 p.m. Mainstream & Plus with early rounds begin at 1:30 p.m. with caller Walt Bull and cuer Barbara Horlor. There will be refreshments, a 50/50 raffle and door prizes. The cost is $6 per dancer. Couples and singles are welcome. The Middle School of the Kennebunks Positive School Climate Committee is hosting an evening for parents, guardians and concerned community members entitled “The Middle School Experience: Raising Awareness,” on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the middle school library. William Paterson, project director for substance abuse prevention at Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition, and a member of the faculty of the University of New England, will be the keynote speaker. Paterson is a co-author of the award winning video “Point of No Return,” and executive producer of CHCC’s “A Parent’s Guide to Social Networking.” In addition to Paterson’s presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in one of the following four breakout sessions: social networking and cyber bullying; adolescent brain development; anxiety in middle school students; and healthy relationships. Discussion and refreshments will follow.
