SANFORD — A man pointed a handgun at a clerk Friday and demanded money, but ran away when the clerk didn’t give him any.

The attempted robbery of L’il General Store, at the roundabout in south Sanford, took place at about 9:19 p.m. Friday.

Now, law enforcement officers are looking for the public’s help in attempting to identify the perpetrator.

Sanford Police Corporal Matthew Gagne said the would-be robber displayed a silver-colored semi-automatic pistol.

“When money was not provided to him, he fled the store on foot,” said Gagne in a prepared statement, but police don’t know whether he then got into a vehicle or if he ran away.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we are pursuing all leads,” Gagne said.

The man is about 5 feet, 6 inches tall. During the robbery, he was wearing a black ski mask, dark blue hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, brown shoes and purple gloves.

Police this morning said the suspect was still at large. They are asking that anyone with information regarding the robbery attempt to call the anonymous tip line at 324-9170, and at the prompt, select number 4.

Police did not report any injuries as a result of the robbery attempt.
