“IN BLOOM,” directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili.
This coming-of-age drama, which is Georgia’s nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, centers on two teenage girls (Lika Babluani and Mariam Bokeria) who struggle to escape their turbulent families and break free of societal restrictions in 1990s war-torn Georgia. They do so simply by being young women – outspoken, passionate, a little bit boy-crazy – until something happens to threaten their friendship.
Written by Ekvtimishvili from her own life experiences. Not rated. Running time: 1:42. In Georgian with English subtitles.
Showing at: Portland Museum of Art, 6:30 p.m. Friday; 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
