A new, area coupon club will meet Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Shaker Hill Kitchens, 17 Thornton Ave., Saco. Meetings will be the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Participants can meet others who are trying to save money and want to share their thoughts and ideas. Light refreshments will be served. “Goin’ Wild in the Galapagos” is set for Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 12-1 p.m. at the Wells Reserve. View the flora, fauna and rugged landscapes of the fabled Galapagos Islands with Timothy Dubay, a research assistant at the Wells Reserve. He traveled to the Ecuadorian islands in 2013 and will share his experience in this Lunch & Learn. Bring lunch and a $2 donation to Mather Auditorium at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. To help families and high school seniors complete the Free Application for Student Aid, or FAFSA, form and apply for financial aid early, the Finance Authority of Maine, acronym FAME, is hosting free statewide in-person help sessions, including one in Biddeford on Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m., at the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology, 10 Maplewood Ave. Financial aid experts will be on hand to answer questions and help families and students fill out the FAFSA form. There will be a Republican gathering for residents of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 300 of Kennebunk Town Hall. Attendees will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on President Obama and the Democratic-led Maine Legislature. Those planning on attending are encouraged to bring friends.
Thursday, Jan. 30
Maine author and outdoorsman John Ford will speak at the Town Club in Sanford, 5:30-7 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 30. Ford is a retired Maine game warden and former Waldo County sheriff and the author of “Suddenly, The Coder Didn’t Taste So Good, Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine.” The event is hosted by the Sanford Rotary Club and is open to the public, but those attending must register. Saturday, Feb. 1
A hands-on ice harvesting demonstration will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1 on the Mill Pond next to the 19th Century Willowbrook Village, Elm Street in Newfield. This first-ever event is hosted by Willowbrook and the Historical Society of Newfield. The Curran Homestead Living History Farm and Museum will also participate with a contribution of manpower and tools; they will be doing their own annual harvest on Fields Pond in Orrington the following weekend. Hot cocoa will be available and some vintage film footage of past Maine ice harvests will be shown at Newfield’s historical society building. The event is free for all ages, and visitors can try their hand at ice cutting using Willowbrook’s saw. A few horse-driven tools will also be on display, and anyone with memories of the ice harvesting days is encouraged to attend and speak. Willowbrook will also have traditional arts workshops, metal casting and blacksmithing, under way the same day, which visitors can observe. A turkey pie supper with all the fixings will be offered Saturday, Feb. 1 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church, 160 Alfred Road, West Kennebunk. The Rebecca Emery Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its next meeting on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. It will take place at Atria Senior Living, 1 Penny Lane, Kennebunk. The program will be the presentation of awards to the student winners of the DAR American History Essay Contest and the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. Also honored at this meeting will be the winners of the 2013-14 DAR Good Citizen Contest for seniors from the area high schools. Refreshments and a silver tea will be served. “Skirts, Stays and Skeleton Suits: Clothing Children in New England,” a lecture about children’s clothing of the past, will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 4 from 7-8 p.m. at the Jewett-Eastman House in South Berwick. In this illustrated lecture, associate curator Laura Johnson will present images of intriguing and rare items from Historic New England’s collection of children’s clothing and portraits. This program is $5 for Historic New England members, and $10 for non-members. Registration is required. For more information, call 384-2454.
