AUBURN — Maine public health officials are headed to Central Maine Community College in Auburn to test students and staff for tuberculosis.
The testing scheduled Monday by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention comes after a student at the school tested positive for the disease earlier this month.
The school earlier this month sent letters and emails to hundreds of people who may have had exposure to the student.
Health officials say the person was infected in the fall, but was just diagnosed this month. The person has been treated with antibiotics and is recovering.
Tuberculosis can be spread through the air when someone with the lung disease coughs, sneezes, or even speaks.
Monday’s testing is free.
