NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Parents of children at a Massachusetts school district are speaking out against a proposal to eliminate observance of one Christian and two Jewish holidays.
A school calendar study committee has recommended that schools in Northborough and Southborough no longer close on Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Good Friday.
The Telegram & Gazette reports that the committee says the move would shorten the school year, while keeping the holidays would necessitate considering closing schools for the holidays of other religions.
Under the proposal, students and staff who want to take the holidays off would be excused to do so. Tests would not be given on those days, and athletic events wouldn’t be scheduled.
