BIDDEFORD — J. Marcel Courtois, 92, of Biddeford, died on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at St. Andre’s Healthcare in Biddeford.

He was born in Biddeford on June 6, 1921, the son of Arthur and Jennie (Blais) Courtois. He was educated in Biddeford schools.

On Aug. 30, 1946, he married Jeannette Paquette at St. Andre’s Church in Biddeford. She preceded him in death in 1987.

Marcel served our country in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II.

He worked for 45 years with Bates Mfg., Pepperell, W.P. Pepperell and WestPoint Stevens in Biddeford. He then went on to work at New England Homes in Biddeford. In retirement, he worked as a gas station attendant on the Maine Turnpike in Kennebunk and also as a school crossing guard on the corner of Hill and West streets.

He was a member of the Biddeford Eagles Club and served on the Biddeford City Council for many years.

Marcel was an avid horseshoe player, enjoyed music and playing the fiddle. He liked playing cards and meeting with his friends at McDonalds, but most of all he enjoyed being with his children.

Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by: a brother, Paul Courtois; and three sisters, Lillian Roberge, Sylvaine Poirier and Theresa Roy.

He is survived by: two sons, Richard Courtois and his wife Jennifer and Thomas Courtois and his companion Christy Nash; four daughters, Monique Paris and her husband Robert of Alfred, Suzanne Souliere and her husband Reynald, Mary Roberge and her husband Richard and Denise Lamontagne and her husband Lionel, all of Biddeford; one sister, Andrea Chretien of Alfred; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014 at Hope Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
