Portland Pirates right winger Kyle Hagel and five players from the Adirondack Phantoms have been suspended as the result of their actions in the final minute of Sunday’s game at the Colisee in Lewiston.

Hagel received a two-game suspension, while Adirondack’s Kris Newbury (four games), Cal Heeter (three games), Zack FitzGerald (two games), Ben Holmstrom (one game) and Tye McGinn (one game) were also suspended after two brawls near the end of Portland’s 2-0 victory.

The teams combined for 299 penalty minutes – 179 against Adirondack. Most of those resulted from two altercations in the last 21 seconds of the game. Heeter, Adirondack’s goalie, twice left the bench to join the fray during the first brawl, which started moments after he was pulled for an extra skater. FitzGerald drew 40 penalty minutes, including three game misconducts, after his fight with Hagel, who received a match penalty for slashing.

Hagel will miss Tuesday night’s game against the St. John’s IceCaps and Saturday’s game against the Manchester Monarchs.
