Keys for Lake Region: Carter must avoid foul trouble as she’s the focal point at both ends. When Sarah Hancock can dribble drive, Carter becomes tougher to guard. The Lakers will have to be efficient offensively as MDI has a size and length advantage at four positions. Turner has gotten used to playing the opponents’ best offensive player. How she does againt the taller, stronger Hannah Shaw will be a sub-plot. Lake Region has lost in the state final two straight seasons and five of the past eight years.

Keys for MDI: To continue to share the ball and to get points in transition. All five starters plus key reserve Sierra Tapley (8.8 ppg, 2.8 apg) average between 1.7 and 2.8 assists. Miss Maine semifinalist Hannah Shaw and her younger sister run the court well for Coach Brent Barker. The elder Shaw had a huge 25-point, 16-rebound game as MDI ended Presque Isle’s 64-game win streak in the East final. MDI’s last state championship came in 2003 when the team won its third straight and was coached by Barker’s father, Burt, and featured his sister, Bracey.

Keys For Poland: The Knights come into their first state championship game on a seven-game winning streak. They want to continue what they’ve been doing, which is to play within themselves and be strong with the basketball. Avoiding turnovers will be key. Poland will look to slow down Old Town, which likes to fast break. The Knights have to be ready for Old Town’s changing of defenses, which the Coyotes like to do. The Knights want to stay balanced in scoring but still give C.J. Martin openings. John Fossett and Billy Bickford are key reserves in the frontcourt. The offense works best when it dumps the ball inside and then passes back outside, which frees up jump shots for Martin, Alan Young or Tyler Michaud.

Keys For Old Town: Old Town, like Poland, came from the sixth seed to win its regional. The Coyotes come into the game on a nine-game winning streak. “We want to continue what we’ve been doing,” said Coach Brian McDormand. Old Town will look to push the ball whenever possible. The Coyotes can be tough to defend because all five starters are capable of scoring in double figures. Sharing the ball is ingrained. Old Town likes to change defenses to throw the opponent off stride. The Coyotes will pay extra attention to Martin, who can get hot quickly as he showed in scoring 26 points in the regional final.
