‘Fukushima’ author at library

The Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth on Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. will host Maine author Susan Q. Stranahan, whose most recent book is entitled, “Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster.”

Stranahan was the lead journalist of The Philadelphia Inquirer team that was awarded a 1980 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Three Mile Island accident. For 28 years, she was a reporter primarily covering environmental issues. She is also the author of “Susquehanna: River of Dreams.”

During the event in Cape Elizabeth, Stranahan, who lives on Chebeague Island, will discuss her latest book and share her insights on nuclear energy and the environment. The program is free and open to the public. Call 799-1720 for more information.

‘Girl Rising’ presentation at CEHS

On Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m., a showing of the documentary “Girl Rising” will be held at Cape Elizabeth High School. Around the world, millions of girls face barriers to education that boys do not. And yet, when you educate a girl you can break the cycles of poverty in just one generation.

“Girl Rising” is a groundbreaking film and a movement for girls’ education across the globe. The show is free, and the doors open at 6:30 p.m., but donations of $2 will also be accepted. All contributions will go toward building a school in Kenya.

Authors descend on high school

On Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., an Authorfest event will be held in the cafeteria at Cape Elizabeth High School. The event is the culmination of the school district’s “Cape Celebrates Literacy” month.

Many books will be on sale, and authors and illustrators of books for ages 3 through adult will be on hand to converse and sign their books. See http://capeauthorfest13.edublogs.org for more information.

Compost bins for sale

The Cape Elizabeth Recycling Committee is sponsoring a compost bin sale that’s open to all residents. Each Earth Machine compost bin is $25 and orders will be taken through April 30. In addition, a companion kitchen scrap pail is available for $5.

The committee is encouraging residents to make a greater effort to reduce the amount of food, leaf and yard waste they generate by initiating their own backyard-composting program. The Earth Machine bins have an 80-gallon capacity and are made from recycled plastic.

The bins help converts grass, leaves and table scraps into an abundant supply of rich garden soil. They assemble easily and come with a 10-year warranty and instruction booklet. Call Al Ward at 799-4151 for an order form or more information.

College information night at SPHS

South Portland High School will host a College Information Night for juniors in the lecture hall on Tuesday, April 15, at 6 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Amanda Card, assistant director of admissions at Southern Maine Community College.

Information presented will include navigating the admission process at four-year and two-year colleges, effective college searches, visits, and tours and what colleges consider when choosing students to admit. Call 767-3266 for more information.
