PORTLAND — Donald S. Beal, 65, of Saco, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Pamela F. (Pendleton) Beal.

Born on Sept. 23, 1948 in Augusta to the late Edmund and Blanche (Grindle) Beal, he spent the better part of his childhood in Saco and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1967.

In October of 1967, he married his best friend and high school sweetheart, Pamela.

Don worked for the State of Maine in the Department of Health and Human Services for 28 years before retiring in 2008.

He grew up attending the Unitarian Universalist Church of Saco, where he sang for 25 years with his wife, Pamela, accompanied by his mother on the organ.

As a young adult, he and his wife became active in community theater, performing with the Portland Players, Portland Stage Company, Lyric Theatre and the Magic of Christmas. Together, they also began a summer theater in Kennebunk.

Don will be most remembered for his love of family, music and humor. His ability to make others laugh has endeared him to many and showed he did not take life or himself too seriously. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Don was the father of the late Andrew C. Beal, who passed away in 1984.

Besides his wife of 47 years, he is survived by: his three children, Erika Dewitt and her husband Steve of Homosassa, Fla., Stephanie Beal, a recent graduate of Boston University, of Saco, and Krystian Beal, who is currently studying at the University of Maine in Orono.

He also leaves: two grandchildren, Kortney and Kai; his brother, Rev. Dr. Richard Beal and his wife Joan of Norway; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Saco, 60 School St. in Saco, with a reception to follow at the church.
