KENNEBUNK — Dr. J. Michael Hogan, 81, of Kennebunk Beach, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at his home, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born on June 9, 1932 in Kew Gardens, London, a son of Thomas F. and Marjorie (Sennick) Hogan.

Mike graduated from St. Georges College in Kingston, Jamaica, University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons, both in Dublin, Ireland. He served his medical residency in Newfoundland and New York City. He served his surgical residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Conn., where he also met his future bride of 55 years, Joan.

He began his orthopedic surgery practice in Waterbury in 1963, where his passion of sports medicine was fostered. He was the resident physician for all the Minor League Baseball teams that played in Waterbury from the mid-1960s through the 1970s and was a highly respected contributor to numerous sports medicine advisory councils throughout the U.S. Mike eventually relocated his medical practice to Maine in 1981. He practiced at Sanford/Springvale Orthopedic Associates and was the attending orthopedic surgeon at the former Goodall Hospital (now Southern Maine Health Care) in Sanford. He retired from surgical practice in 1996, but did continue his affiliation with the hospital as acting occupational health specialist, eventually retiring from that position in 2010.

Mike was an active congregant of the Catholic Church and religiously attended daily Mass at the Franciscan Monastery and St. Martha’s Church, both in Kennebunk. He was a member of Webhannet Golf Club, where he routinely walked 18 holes until he was 80, the Rotary Club of Kennebunk, the Knights of Columbus, and the Marching and Chowder Society, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was also known to dress as Santa Claus on an annual basis and serve meals and pass out gifts to those in need on Christmas day.

He had a lifelong love of soccer, having played throughout his university years as well as coaching and sponsoring area youth teams. He maintained his fervent passion for his beloved N.Y. Giants, N.Y. Rangers and N.Y. Yankees, despite having lived 53 years in New England, and embraced being challenged by the New York Times crossword puzzle. He loved to travel, especially to Jamaica, the United Kingdom and Singapore to visit family and reminisce of childhood memories.
