READING, Pa. — The Portland Sea Dogs (18-10) celebrated Cinco de Mayo by scoring all eight runs with two outs, as they took the Eastern League series opener from the Reading Fightin’ Phils (14-13), 8-1, on Monday night at First Energy Stadium.
Portland has won three straight after losing the first two games of the trip.
Deven Marrero (2-for-4) knocked home a career-high four runs, blasting a two-run homer in the second. Marrero added the final two runs with a single in the eighth. Mookie Betts extended his on-base streak to 57 straight games (62 including the playoffs), going 2-for-3 with an RBI, two walks and three runs scored.
The second game of the three-game series is tonight at 6:35 p.m. Portland sends Mickey Pena (1-0) to the hill against Readings’s Severino Gonzalez (3-1).
