OLD ORCHARD BEACH — A fire that sprang up along the railroad tracks in multiple communities Thursday afternoon destroyed 10 trailers at a local campground.

Fire Chief John Glass said firefighters were first called with a report of fire around 1:40 p.m., and then calls were “pouring in,” including multiple grass fires and a fire at Wild Acres RV resort.

Glass said the worst area was from Temple Avenue to the Saco town line, with the heaviest damage at the Wagon Wheel RV Resort, where 10 trailers were destroyed and six sustained heat damage.

Glass said there were no major injuries in Old Orchard Beach, though a few firefighters were treated for exhaustion. He said firefighters left the scene around 6:30 p.m.

Saco Fire Chief John Duross said in Saco, there were fires reported from the Old Orchard Beach town line to Common Street, with the first call around 1:30 p.m.

Duross said in a phone interview early Friday that there were some sheds, fences and some residential structures damaged, but damage reports at the time were “very preliminary.”

Duross said there was one resident who had a breathing related medical emergency. One firefighter was treated at the scene for exhaustion, but after resting, was back at work three hours later, said Duross.

Duross said firefighters left the scene around 6:30 p.m. but went back about four times for flare-ups.

The Maine Forest Service collected water from a pond at the Biddeford-Saco Country Club and dropped it from a helicopter to help extinguish fires, said Glass.

Firefighters in both municipalities received help from fire departments as far away as Windham.

“We gathered any resources we could,” said Glass.

Both fire chiefs reported help from residents as well.

“Most importantly, the turnout from residents, citizens and bystanders was greatly appreciated,” said Duross.

If not for their help, the damage would have been worse, he said. He said he witnessed residents and city staff with garden hoses, and said the police chief and the mayor were working side by side to extinguish a fire on Beach Street.

Glass said there were reports of trains throwing sparks, but a cause of the fire has not been determined.

Local fire officials are working with Pan Am Railways, the Maine Forest Service, the State Fire Marshall’s office and York County Emergency Management to investigate the cause of the fire and determine how much damage occurred, said local fire chiefs.
