BRUNSWICK — It is estimated that 25 percent of an average household’s waste consists of yard trimmings and kitchen scraps that can easily be composted. By composting, Brunswick residents can save up to $80 for every ton of refuse removed from the waste stream.
As part of the Earth Day 2014 celebration, the Brunswick Recycling Committee is participating in a statewide backyard compost bin sale. The black bins have a 10-year warranty, and are made of 100 percent recycled plastic. They are approximately 35 inches high and 33 inches wide and are large enough for a family of five. Through May 31, a home compost bin and a how-to guide can be reserved.
Call the Public Works Department at 725-6654 to reserve one. They cost $48.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
