Jefferson Welch crosses the finish line to win the men’s race at 10th Maine Coast Marathon on Sunday morning on the campus of the University of New England in Biddeford. Welch, a 27-year-old from of Haverhill, Mass., was just 23 seconds ahead of Erik Russo of Johnston, R.I. at the halfway mark, but ran the second half of the race in a blistering 1:23:27.7 to finish the 26.2 miles in a time of 2:42:36.3, 7:03 ahead of second-placed finisher Russo. Mary Klene, a 30-year-old from Manchester, N.H., won the women’s race in a time of 3:12:59.4. The marathon started at Kennebunk High School and winded its way by more than five miles of beach-side views in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Cape Porpoise and Biddeford on the way to the finish line next to Sokokis Hall at UNE. More than 750 runners ran in the 65-degree heat, an increase of more than 450 runners from last year, when the race returned after a 26-year absence. (CAMERON DUNBAR/Journal Tribune)
