AUGUSTA — Central Maine Power Company distributed more than 9,500 winter clothing items to 180 schools during its 10th annual Community Mitten Drive.
“A donation of 500 pairs of mittens from Marden’s toward the end of the drive put us over the top, and we couldn’t be more pleased,” said CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “There has always been a tremendous need for these items, so by exceeding our goal, we should have enough on hand next fall to distribute to children in need at the start of the cold weather season.”
CMP corresponds with schools throughout its service area to gauge the need for children’s mittens, hats and scarves. Once received, the items are distributed to where they’re needed most. Employees from across the company are involved in the project.
CMP’s Community Mitten Drive traces its roots to a local effort started by employees at the utility’s Portland Service Center. In 2004, the company decided to launch a larger program to cover children throughout its service area.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
