coming to town
The Portland Public Library bookmobile, which holds 1,700 items for all ages, will be at its local partner library, Freeport Community Library, on Wednesday, May 28, from noon-1:20 pm. The Freeport library can process a Portland Public Library card for Cumberland County residents at no cost. Those interested can apply for a Portland library card at the FCL main circulation desk Monday through Friday during normal business hours. A Portland Public Library card allows to access many online resources.
A financial expert will accompany the bookmobile and will help answer financial questions.
Sunday to Sundae 5K debuts June 1
The first Sunday to Sundae Trot for Teens 5K and L.L. Bean Kayak Raffle is scheduled for Sunday, June 1, at the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St. It is sponsored by RSU 5 Recreation & Community Education, The 5K will begin at 9 a.m., and after the race, participants can make their own Ben & Jerry’s ice cream sundae. Shortly after the race awards, the kayak raffle winner will be announced.
Proceeds from both events go toward supporting The Port Teen Center, located in the basement of the Freeport Community Center. The nonprofit organization is a youth-driven facility that provides a safe, enriching, and dynamic atmosphere for area teenagers.

Pre-registration deadline is May 29, cost $20. No additional registrations will be accepted until the day of the race and the price will increase to $25.
GOP hosting candidates night
The Freeport Republican Town Committee is holding a Meet the Candidates Night on Wednesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, located on Mallet Drive, entrance at rear of building.
Candidate Jennifer Johnson seeking a state Senate seat and Paul Schulz is running for state representative. The night will consist of a brief introduction, a question-and-answer period and closing statement.
Try the train
for $10
On May 17 and 18, rides on the Amtrak Downeaster are being offered for $10 each way for travel between Brunswick and Haverhill, Mass., or points in between, on trains 691, 692, 694, 695, 698, 699 only. Up to two children ages 2 to 12 can accompany each adult at half price. Tickets are required prior to boarding and can be purchased at www.AmtrakDowneaster.com.
Bottle drive to benefit food pantry
Freeport Community Services, in conjunction with the Freeport Lioness-Lions Club, is holding a bottle drive for the month of May, raising funds for a Good Shepherd Food Bank Matching Challenge Grant that will allow FCS to purchase food for the food pantry.
Bottles can be dropped off at Country Redemption on Route136 tagged for FCS/GSFB Fund. The Lioness-Lions Club will be sponsoring a drop-off/pick-up day on Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the community center, 53 Depot St. To arrange pickup, call 751-3649 or email [email protected].
Program covers Wolfe’s Neck
park history
“Wolfe’s Neck Woods: Through the Lens of History,” a program on the history of the state park, will be presented by Andy Hutchinson, park ranger, and Michael Frey, interpretive ranger, on Wednesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m., at Freeport Community Library.
In 1969, this area of more than 200 acres was given to the state by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence M.C. Smith of Freeport. The park contains varied ecosystems, including climax white pine and hemlock forests, a salt marsh estuary, and the rocky shorelines on Casco Bays and the Harraseeket River. Library Friends meet Monday
Friends of the Freeport Community Library will hold its monthly meeting Monday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the library. All are welcome to attend the meeting and join the volunteers who support and promote the library.
Since forming in 2011, the group has provided free or discounted museum and park passes for patrons, started sponsoring a “Meet the Author” series of book talks, advocated for the addition of a technology librarian and offered support for a wide variety of library events and programs. The Freeport Masons will host a smothered beef supper on Saturday, May 17, from 5-6:30 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge on Mallet Drive in Freeport. The menu will feature smothered beef with mashed potatoes, two vegetables, homemade biscuits, dessert and beverage, for $8 per adult and children under 12 for half-price.
Woman’s Club celebrating 90th
The Freeport Woman’s Club will meet at 1 p.m., Friday, May 16, at the Freeport Community Library, to celebrate its 90th birthday. During the party past presidents and lifetime members will be honored. Music and refreshments will be provided. All are welcome.
Yard sale to
benefit chorus
The Greater Freeport Community Chorus will hold a yard sale fundraiser Saturday, May 24, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., offering household items, collectibles, tools, furniture, antiques, clothing, baked goods and more.
The chorus is a nonprofit organization with the goal of enriching the community by promoting choral arts. The adult, mixed-voice group does not require auditions or past choral experience.
The sale will run rain or shine in the yard and barn at 181 Main St., Freeport, next to the Freeport Community Library entrance.
Plant sale
coming up
The annual Wolfe’s Neck Farm plant sale will be held on Saturday, May 17, rain or shine, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, 184 Burnett Road, Freeport.
A large selection of perennials, annuals, herbs and seedlings, from full shade to full sun, will be available. All plants are donated by volunteers, friends and neighbors. There are plants for the beginning gardener and those with green thumbs. Proceeds support Wolfe’s Neck Farm, a nonprofit that provides educational and recreational opportunities for area residents.
Anyone wishing to donate plants should bring them to the farm on Friday, May 16, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Theater of Awesome to stage ‘Pinocchio’

The Freeport Lioness-Lions Club is holding a food drive to benefit the Freeport Community Services Food Panty, at Shaw’s Supermarket, Freeport, on Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Donations of non-perishable food items and/or money will be accepted. Bird author David Sibley in town
Freeport Wild Bird Supply will host a program with David Allen Sibley, author of “The Sibley Guide to Birds, second edition,” Friday, May 16, from 5-7:30 p.m., at Freeport Community Library. Sibley’s presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
When Sibley published “The Sibley Guide to Birds” in 2000, he introduced a new approach to the field guide, which quickly became the go-to guide for birders of all levels. This new second edition, published in March, is a completely updated version of the book. It features more than 600 new paintings (including 115 rare species), more than 700 revised range maps and expanded text.

Book talk focuses on PTSD
Freeport Community Library will host a special Memorial Day-related book talk Wednesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. with Susan Dahlgren Daigneault of North Berwick, author of “In the Shadow of a Mountain: A Soldier’s Struggle with PTSD.” The book the story of the author’s father, World War II veteran and Aroostook County resident, Lt. Edward C. Dahlgren. Once described as “Maine’s very own Sgt. York,” Dahlgren was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor by President Harry Truman at a White House ceremony in August 1945 for his bravery in combat. But Dahlgren and many other soldiers who haunted by the gruesome events of war. Dahlgren lost 40 pounds, suffered from jaundice, stammered and his hands shook. He also suffered night terrors.
His daughter recounts the price her father (and her family) paid as he battled what is now identified as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. For more information, see www.freeportlibrary.com or call 865-3307.
Writer Charlotte Bacon appears in South Freeport
South Freeport Congregational Church is holding its first fundraising Author Luncheon on Friday, May 16, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with writer Charlotte Bacon, author of “A Private State,” “Lost Geography,” “There is Room for You,” “Split Estate” and her newest, a mystery, “The Twisted Thread.” The luncheon will be at the church’s Community Hall, 98 South Freeport Road.
Bacon, who lives in Maine, will speak about her work. There will also be a question-and-answer period and book signing. Bacon’s debut collection of stories, “A Private State,” won the PEN/Hemingway Award for First Fiction in 1998.
The cost for the luncheon is $20 per person and tickets must be purchased in advance. Call 865-4012 for reservations.

Plans are under way for Freeport’s annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony. This year Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26. It is hoped that many civic groups will be involved with the parade and ceremony that follows at the Town Park.
