A Massabesic Middle School eighth-grader has taken top prize in this year’s essay contest sponsored by the Friends of Alfred Shaker Museum.
Molly Doyle of West Newfield, daughter of Brian and Mary Doyle, has won top prize with an essay about the museum’s mural completed by artist Sandra Howe in 2011. It is her second consecutive prize-winning contest essay.
FASM presented her prize on Saturday, May 17, in an afternoon ceremony at the museum. She won $125 and a print of a scene on Shaker Hill by local artist Robert Arsenault.
For her essay, Doyle interviewed Howe and interpreted details of the mural scene. The mural is a historically accurate depiction of Alfred Shaker village on a summer’s day about 1875.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
