The visiting South Portland High School softball team earned a 7-5 victory over the Windham Eagles last Friday, but it wasn’t easy. The Red Riots had to come from behind with three runs in the top of the 7th inning.
Lead-off batter Laurine German gave the visitors a charge right out of the gate when she took the second pitch from Windham’s Katelyn Tucker deep over the centerfield fence for a 1-0 lead.
Tucker had an answer in the third inning, though, when she gave Windham a 2-1 lead with her own home run with two outs and a 3-2 count.
The Red Riots got a run in the 5th (Taylor Batchelor) and two in top of the 6th (Kiley Kennedy and Sarah Micucci) for a 4-2 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the 6th, Christina Mooradian hit a three-run homer to give the advantage back to Windham, 5-4.
German opened the 7th inning with a double, then scored to tie the game, 5-5, on Miranda Gleason’s single. Four batters later, with two out and two on, Sarah Micucci singled in both runners for what turned out to be the final score, 7-5.
The Red Riots (9-2) won Monday at Westbrook, 6-0, ahead of a Wednesday game at Biddeford (7-2).
The Eagles (4-6) lost to Gorham, 3-0, on Monday ahead of a Wednesday game hosting Bonny Eagle.
