CAPE ELIZABETH-SCARBOROUGH-SOUTH PORTLAND – Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 26, this year and the communities of Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland all have festivities planned to honor the sacrifices made by the nation’s veterans.
• Cape Elizabeth
Parade kicks off at 9 a.m. Parade route runs down Ocean House Road from the intersection of Fowler Road, makes a turn onto Scott Dyer Road and ends at the War Veterans Memorial next to Pond Cove Elementary School. A brief ceremony with a wreath laying will conclude the formalities. Following the ceremony, all are invited to an open house at the Town Center Fire Station.
• Scarborough
American Legion Libby-Mitchell Post No. 76 is once again sponsoring the town’s annual parade, which runs from the high school down Route 1 to the Maine Veterans Home. Parade starts at 10 a.m. Followed by an open house at the Legion Hall on Mason-Libby Road and noon. Prior to the parade, remembrance ceremonies will be held at 8 a.m. at Black Point Cemetery; 8:30 a.m. Dunstan Corner soldier’s monument; 9 a.m. Blue Point Cemetery; and 9:15 a.m. at Memorial Park.
• South Portland
The South Portland War Veteran’s Memorial Association, which consists of VFW Post No. 832 and American Legion Post No. 35, will host the city’s parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. The route runs from the Southern Maine Community College campus down Broadway to the Veteran’s Memorial Monument in Mill Creek Park. A short ceremony will follow the parade. In addition, a wreath laying ceremony will be held at the public boat landing at Bug Light Park at noon. Also a Memorial Day Mass will be held at Calvary Cemetery at 9 a.m.
