The Mt. Ararat High School baseball team came into its Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference matchup with one win and facing a team in Messalonskee which was sitting on top of the Eastern Maine Class A Heal Point Standings one season after winning the Eastern Maine Class A title.
Mt. Ararat’s Kevin Carter pitched a complete seven innings, striking out two, while allowing nine hits and as the hosts stunned Messalonskee, 7-4.
Mt. Ararat finished with seven runs on eight hits in the contest and provided the team some momentum going into the end of the season. The players know the magnitude of this win.
“This is the best that I have seen this team play all year, we pitched well, made defensive stops and were playing good baseball,” said Mt. Ararat coach Bob Neron.
Starting the offense in the second inning for Mt. Ararat was an RBI single by designated hitter Dakota D’Orio, scoring Dylan Johnson from second base.
The biggest inning for Mt. Ararat came in the fifth. The hosts batted around and scored five runs on five hits.
Griffin Stockford led Mt. Ararat with three singles, while Harper Moutal doubled.
With two outs in the seventh inning, Messalonskee rallied. With the bases loaded, Trevor Gettig smacked an RBI single, making it 7- 4. A mound visit by Neron settled down Carter. The righty recorded the third out to finish off the visitors.
“It was a great team effort, and it wasn’t just me. My teammates were behind me and gave me the runs I needed and made me pitch easier,” said Carter. “We have been struggling the whole year and it’s awesome to get a win against Messalonskee because they are a great team. It was a big win for us.”
Mt. Ararat’s record jumped to 2-8, but more importantly the squad picked up several points in the Heal Point Standings, while Messalonskee dropped to 8-2. Mt. Ararat was led offensively by center fielder Griffin Stockford, who was 3-for-4 on the day with a stolen base.
Messalonskee received two hits from Devin Warren along with three stolen bases, while Zach Mathieu singled, doubled and tripled. Jake Dexter also singled twice.
Mt. Ararat is scheduled to travel to Skowhegan today at 4 p.m.
