Memorial Day

The Gray Annual Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m. Procession will begin at the Russell School and continue to the monument at the center of town where the 15th Alabama Regiment will hold a salute. The parade will then continue to the Henry Pennell Municipal Complex. There, a ceremony will be held in honor of our veterans. The parade will then proceed to the American Legion Hall, where refreshments will be served to the marchers.

Holiday Closing

Youth Field Day

From 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, (rain date June 1) at Royal River Rod and Gun Club on Fish Hatchery Road, New Gloucester, the club is sponsoring a free event for boys and girls, ages 10-15.

Safety instruction is to be given for basic map and compass, archery, .22 rifle, outdoor survival and fishing. Lunch is provided at no cost. Space is limited to 50 participants who must be accompanied for the day by a parent or responsible adult (one adult may be responsible for more than one young person), and pre-registration is required.

Bridge Work

The Maine Turnpike Authority will be repairing the bridge that carries Center Road over the Maine Turnpike in Gray, Maine. The work on the Center Road Bridge consists of adding a new bridge wearing surface, deck repairs and concrete repairs to the substructure.

In order to facilitate major construction activities and to ensure safety of the construction crews and public, we will need to close the bridge for approximately one month beginning on June 1.

Book Sale

Gray Public Library Book Sale will feature a Preview/Early Bird Sale, on Friday, June 6, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with a $5 admission.

The regular annual book sale is on Saturday, June 7, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sunday, June 8, noon-2 p.m. with a Buck-a-Bag Sale feature.

Plants, Archery

The Maine Wildlife Park, located on Route 26 in Gray, will feature the Friends Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, at 8 a.m. This year plants will be sold in the park’s parking lot, no admission fee is required. On Monday, the 26th, plants will continue to be sold, but will be set up inside the park at the Friends Snack Shack. The Friends volunteer group helps out the wildlife park in so many ways; learn more about their ongoing projects and enjoy great bargains on spring plants with annual and perennial flowers, vegetables and floral baskets grown in their own greenhouse.

The following weekend on Saturday, May 31, Archery with Bryant Pond 4-H Shooting Sports will occur at 11 a.m. Certified archery instructors will have equipment and targets to try your hand at this great family sport. www.umaine.edu/bryantpond/

The Patriot 5K race committee would like to thank all of runners, sponsors and volunteers for braving the elements and coming out in huge numbers to St. Gregory’s Church, 24 North Raymond Road, Gray, on May 17 for the 5th Annual Patriot 5K Run/Walk. Congratulations to our overall winners. Ethan Shaw led the men’s field with a blistering time of 14:46 and Michelle Lilienthal won the women’s race with a time of 16:35. Food Drive

For the month of May, the Gray Fire and Rescue Department is collecting non-perishable and canned food for the Gray Food Pantry. You can bring your donations to the Gray Fire and Rescue at 127 Shaker Road.

Fiddlehead Happenings

The Fiddlehead Center for Art and Science invites you to join them as they roar back to the 1920s in support of Fiddlehead and its enrichment programs. Come to their Roaring ’20s Fundraiser on Saturday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m., in a flapper dress or a gangster outfit, prizes awarded for best dressed. Tickets are $35 per person and $60 per couple and include: $100 in play casino chips, commemorative speakeasy mug, group photo booth pictures, beer and wine tasting, jazz music, prizes, hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats.

Fiddlehead Open House for Preschool FiddlestArts, kindergarten (1/2 day), After School (New Children’s Discovery Center) and private music lessons will be on Wednesdays, June 11 and June 25, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Plants were overflowing at last year’s Friends of Maine Wildlife Park Annual Plant Sale.  The popular sale takes place again this weekend.
