BANGOR (AP) — University of Maine System trustees have released a draft strategic plan that would cut about $60 million through workforce reductions over the next five and streamline academic programs to reduce overlap.

The plan approved Thursday is part of an effort to close a projected $69 million budget deficit by 2019.

Trustees Chairman Sam Collins tells the Portland Press Herald that the plan is necessary “in order to be sustainable.”

The long-range plan comes just days after trustees approved a $529 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year that included the elimination of more than 150 jobs across the seven campus system.
