It was a busy day at Bug Light Park in South Portland on Saturday.

There was a wedding on the hill. The South Portland Historical Society Museum was open, with a barbecue out front.

And overhead, the sky was filled with color and motion, thrilling upward-gazing visitors who came to see the fifth annual Bug Light Kite Festival, organized by the Noreasters Kite Club and KONE (Kites Over New England).

Normally, a 40- to 50-foot octopus would be a very scary creature, but the big pink one with the friendly face seen above poses no concern for Ben Weimer, a 2-year-old from Scarborough, who enjoyed the kite festival with his mom, Erin.  South Portland speedsters, from left, Austin Kaidash, Daigen Chadbourne and Ahlyisen Kearns fight the relentless pull of the bol kites during a race.
