SACO — Police are asking for the public’s help in finding an alleged armed robber.
On Wednesday, just before 9:30 p.m., Saco police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Extra Mart convenience store at 28 Elm St.
The employee working the counter told police a man entered the store, said he was armed and to give him the money, and threatened her not to contact the police, according to a press release from Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland.
The clerk told police she placed the money from the cash register into a backpack provided by the assailant, who then fled the store, according to Holland.
The alleged robber is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall with shaggy brown, medium length hair and wearing a dark colored jacket with white stripes around the wrists of the sleeves and an undetermined white logo on the left upper chest, faded blue jeans and brown hiking shoes.
Saco police canvassed the area and were assisted by a Maine State Police canine unit. The state police officer deployed his canine and the track led to Temple Street, but police were unsuccessful in locating the alleged robber. Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division were on site to process the crime scene and interview the employee and the business owner.
Holland is asking that anyone in the area of the business at the time of the robbery who saw the alleged robber entering or exiting the store and has information to contact the police department at 282-8216.
