PORTLAND (AP) — Maine officials will host a public hearing about a plan to craft a multi-state fishery management plan for American eels.
The meeting is scheduled to take place June 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Natural Resources Service Center in Hallowell and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Jeff ’s Catering and Event Center in Brewer. States from Maine to Georgia are hosting similar meetings.
The public hearing concerns a draft addendum to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for American eel. Officials with the Maine Department of Marine Resources say the addendum proposes management options designed to reduce mortality and increase conservation.
Maine marine resource officials say the addendum is the second document to respond to findings in 2012 that indicated American eel populations in American waters are “depleted.”
