BATH — Thelma Ora Sylvester, affectionately known as “Mamie” to all who knew her, died early Saturday morning, June 7, 2014. She was 107 years old.

Mamie started her long life on May 10, 1907, to parents George W. Staples and Bina Emily Weymouth in Lincoln, Maine. Mamie was one of ten children. The large family moved to Bath where she would meet her husband, John H. Sylvester. John and Mamie had one child, Donald Sylvester, who they raised at their family home on Chestnut Street.

An avid lover of poetry, Mamie enjoyed reciting her favorite poems from memory. John and Mamie were very active members in the West Bath Grange. Mamie participated in the gatherings of the Ladie’s Aid Society at the Winter Street Church. The rest of her time she dedicated to her loving family.

Anyone who ever met Thelma will remember her kindness and love. She definitely viewed the world in a pleasant light.

Mamie enjoyed her final years at the Thomas G. Plant Memorial Home.
