WELLS — Wells voters approved the town budget and all warrant items in voting Tuesday.
The municipal budget for fiscal year 2015 is $17.9 million.
Voters in both Wells and Ogunquit approved the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District budget of $23.2 million, a nearly 6 percent increase over the fiscal year 2014 budget. Wells’ portion of that budget is $17.3 million.
The town’s county tax bill is $1.5 million.
Because of revenue raised in other areas, property taxes will be needed to fund only about half the town government portion of expenses, $8.8 million. The total amount the town needs to raise in taxes to fund the budget is $27.8 million.
Another warrant item approved by voters was to appropriate and spend $600,000 to purchase three parcels for the first phase of building a new public safety complex, which will house both the police department and central fire station.
Also approved were several land use changes, including: a clarification of the requirement for open space and density requirements for multifamily developments; revising provisions for disability variances; clarifying when site plan approval is needed when resuming a discontinued use; and modifying off-street parking requirements.
Townspeople voted to lease the old highway garage roof on North Berwick Road to install solar energy panels on it, under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Approval was received to spend $30,000 to work with Kennebunk on a preliminary trail design for the Eastern Trail that would continue the trail in West Kennebunk along the Granite State Gas Line for 7.35 miles in Wells to the North Berwick town line.
Voters also approved new hires, including a highway department mechanic, two new seasonal waterfront maintenance positions, a second part-time transportation center employee and two part-time seasonal employees for veteran gravesite maintenance and town beautification.
In a contested race for a three-year term trustee position on the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District, Jason Vennard bested the school committee’s current chairman, Marc Saulnier, 683-445.
Timothy Roche was elected to a three-year term on the board of selectmen in an uncontested race.
