LENOIR, N.C. — Three cigar box guitars built by luthier Marty Tauber, of Biddeford, Maine are being auctioned off at the Pop Ferguson Blues Heritage Festival VI in Lenoir to raise money for a music student scholarship fund.
Tauber makes custom made cigar box guitars with or without electrical pick-ups. Two of the guitars being auctioned have electrical capability. The three-stringed cigar box guitar, played with a slide, dates back to pre-Civil War, but is enjoying a resurgence in the blues world.
Tauber, who is a corporate trainer for AdvancePierre, said it takes about 15 hours over the course of two weeks to construct his cigar box guitars. A former guitarist himself, Tauber lost part of a finger to a table saw accident, but found he could still play the three-stringed cigar box guitar.
