A Bath man was arrested on a warrant Thursday morning and faces several assault charges for having allegedly abused his 8-week-old son.

Bath Police Lt. Robert Savary said police arrested Brandon E. Ross, 24, of 891 Middle St., on Thursday morning. The warrant charged Ross with six counts of aggravated assault — a crime punishable by up to 10 years incarceration and a $20,000 fine. He was also charged with three counts of assault, a Class C crime punishable by up to five years incarceration and a $5,000 fine; and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, which is a Class D crime carrying a punishment of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

On April 7, the Bath Police Department received a referral from the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate suspected child abuse. It was the child’s visit to a hospital that triggered the referral and lengthy investigation leading to the arrest. Savary wouldn’t release the nature of the child’s injuries other than to say they met the legal definition of serious bodily injury.

“This course of conduct wasn’t just one incident and we believe it was an ongoing situation,” Savary said of the alleged abuse.

The baby boy is no longer with the parents and is currently with other family members, Savary said.

The warrant was issued by the Sagadahoc County District Court after a grand jury indictment. Ross was not able to post bail in the amount of $25,000, was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and was expected to appear before a judge today on the warrant. Savary said his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. at West Bath District Court.

Bath Detective Marc Brunelle was the lead investigator on this case.
