BATH — Sharon Drake Real Estate defeated BMDA, 14-3, in the second round of the Bath Cal Ripken major league baseball playoffs on Sunday.
Sharon Drake pounded out 15 hits. Nicco Bartone was dialed in at the plate, hitting a single, double and a grand-slam home run. Ken Bassett singled four times, with Brogan Shaw notching two singles and a double, Jack Leonard three singles, and Joe Guenther and Dylan Melvin adding a single each. Guenther also made the defensive play of the game, turning a pop fly to third base into a triple play.
Bartone, Shaw, Brenton Cahill and Deja Douglas pitched for Sharon Drake, combining for seven strikeouts.
The BMDA offense was led by Logan Pelletier (two triples) and Joey Cholish (three singles), with Gavin Phillips and Caleb Tibbitts adding a single each. Phillips, Pelletier Tibbitts and Sam Sinibaldi pitched for BMDA, combining on seven strikeouts.
On Monday, Sharon Drake captured a 3-2 win over Smith-Tobey in the opening game championship series.
Despite only managing just two hits against tough Smith-Tobey pitching (Thomas Warren, Isaak Flaming and Jackson Walker, combined 13 strikeouts), Drake came away with the win.
After a scoreless first three frames, Joe Guenther led off the fourth with a walk and reached second base when Shaw singled. Two passed balls resulted in Guenther scoring and Shaw taking third. A Jack Leonard sacrifice plated Shaw for the second run.
Smith-Tobey tied the game in the fifth inning when Kaleb Jackson, Asa Hodgdon and Flaming all doubled, but Bartone dug deep and struck out the next two batters, stranding Flaming on third.
In the top of the sixth, Bartone drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Leonard came up with a single to right field, allowing the speedy Bartone to score the gamewinning run.
Bartone returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and struck out the side to end the game. He pitched four innings, striking out 9, Shaw throwing two scoreless innings and earning three punchouts.
For Smith-Tobey Hodgdon had a single to go with his double and Warren also doubled. Guenther made a diving catch at third base to take away an extra-base hit.
