RICHMOND — The Richmond High School softball team jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead en route to a 16-4 Mercy Rule win over fourth-seeded Searsport on Saturday in a Western Maine Class D semifinal contest.

The top-seeded Bobcats improved to 15-0 and takes on the winner of today’s Vinalhaven North Haven/Greenville contest on Wednesday for the Western D title at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Richmond is defending state champion, havng beaten Penobscot Valley 3-0 last year at St. Joe’s. It was head coach Rick Coughlin’s fifth state championship.

Against Searsport (9-9), Meranda Martin tripled twice and drove in two runs to pace the Richmond offense. Kelsea Anair and Emily Douin each singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, while Autumn Acord added a two-run single.

Martin went the distance on the mound with seven strikeouts and a like number of hits allowed.

Alivia Cross walked 11 and struck two for Searsport, while Mel Ogden doubled in the six-inning loss.
