BRUNSWICK

As repairs and maintenance continue on tracks on which Amtrak’s Downeaster passenger train travels, delay times are getting shorter.

Delays began in May in order to mitigate coldweather affects, similar to frost heaves, on track owned by Pan Am Railways between Portland and Boston.

Travelers at the time had been experiencing delays of between 30 and 40 minutes. Delays are now closer to 15 to 20 minutes, according to Patricia Quinn, executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority that oversees the Downeaster.

“It’s certainly getting better,” said Quinn.

The tracks routinely go through maintenance after the spring thaw, but the severity of this winter has caused more damage than in years past, leading to more repairs, and causing delays. Much of the repairs include adjusting the rail ballast, and also tie replacement and some rail replacement.

Tie replacement will occur next week, and Quinn said trains ought to be back on schedule by the end of the month.
