Cavaliers offer coaching ob to Blatt

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavaliers offered successful European coach David Blatt their coaching job Thursday night and are discussing a contract with him, said a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team is not commenting.

After an exhaustive, five-week search, the Cavs zeroed in on Blatt to make him their third coach in three years.

Yahoo! first reported Cleveland’s offer to Blatt.

The 55-year-old Blatt recently resigned as coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, this year’s Euroleague champion, to pursue his dream of coaching in the NBA. He was coveted as an assistant by Minnesota and Golden State.

Embid to have surgery on foot

Kansas center Joel Embiid is scheduled to have surgery Friday to repair a stress fracture in his right foot, a surprising development that could affect the top choices in next week’s NBA draft.

Embiid, one of the top three candidates the Cleveland Cavaliers were considering for the No. 1 overall pick, fractured the navicular bone in his right foot, agent Arn Tellem said. Embiid will be unable to participate in any additional workouts and will not attend the draft in New York.

Exactly when Embiid injured his foot was not immediately clear, but the combination of last season’s back injury and this summer’s foot injury could give some teams pause on draft night.

Embiid worked out for the Cavaliers last week. Fellow Kansas star Andrew Wiggins worked out for the Cavs on Wednesday and Duke’s Jabari Parker was expected to audition for the top pick on Friday.

Riley: Heat ready for offseason challenge

MIAMI (AP) — Heat President Pat Riley said Miami is ready for the offseason and the challenge of keeping LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh together going forward.

Riley opened his season-ending news conference saying that he was angry about what he calls a lack of perspective about the Heat, who have been to the NBA Finals in each of the last four seasons and won two of the last three championships.

James, Wade and Bosh can all become free agents this summer.
