Members of the Class of 2014 elected to the Cum Laude Society

Sophie Benson is the daughter of Jeff Benson and Michele Polacsek of Portland. She is a recipient of a 2014 Vergn Hewes Science Award and Community Service recognition. Sophie has been a member of the two-time state championship Science Olympiad team, winning individual gold, silver, and bronze medals. She has been involved in the high school biomedical research series at Maine Medical Research Center, and was part of the championship MEST-UP team on WPXT-TV. She has participated in Yearbook, the Project Respect mentoring program, and The Hope Elephants Foundation. She also worked with elephants in Thailand two years ago at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. Sophie has been a member of the Southwestern Conference-winning Swim team for three years. She plans to attend UCLA.

Graham Chance is the son of John and Linda Chance of Cape Elizabeth. Graham has served as an Admissions Guide for three years and as a teacher’s assistant/mentor in a sixth grade math class. He has played the drums in the Jazz Band for four years and in the state championship Jazz Combo for three. He has also founded his own software development business. Graham is a four-year member of the Varsity Lacrosse team and served as captain this year, has participated in Cross Country for two years including as captain this year, and has participated in JV soccer for two years, one of those as captain. He plans to attend Colby College.

Amelia Deady is the daughter of Conan Deady and Cynthia Berlinger of Freeport. Amelia has participated in Yearbook, serving as co-editor this year, and was a member of Model UN. She has received numerous awards for achievements in swimming, including two state championships, multiple top four finishes, the 2011 Southwestern Championship Swimmer of the Meet, and three Southwestern Championship team titles. She has also been a member of the state championship Varsity Lacrosse team for three years. Amelia will attend Amherst College.

Lydia Fox is the daughter of John and Kristen Fox of Falmouth. She is the recipient of a 2014 Vergn Hewes Science Award and has received Community Service recognition. She has been a member of the two-time state champion Science Olympiad team for three years, serving as captain. She has participated in the Science Bowl and the Math Team, has participated in Project Story Boost (reading to young children), the Community Service Activity, the Steel Band, and Chorus. Lydia was captain of the Varsity Cross Country team and the Varsity Track team, winning the Most Improved and Coach’s Award in track. She has also participated in JV soccer and JV and Varsity basketball. Lydia will attend Middlebury College.

Talia Friedland is the daughter of Paul Friedland and K. Page Herrlinger of Portland. She is a recipient of the 2014 Heather Brown Visual Arts Award, and received Community Service recognition this year. Talia has been the designer of many posters for Waynflete dance and dramatic productions, has been involved with RAPS (a peer counseling group), and volunteered at the Maine Historical Society. She was a co-editor of Yearbook this year. She has been a member of the Crew team for four years, taking on the role of coxswain last year. Talia will attend the University of Chicago.

 Louis Frumer is the son of John Frumer and Elizabeth Barrett of Portland. He has been a member of the two-time state championship Science Olympiad team, earning an individual 3rd place in the Gravity Vehicle competition junior year and 2nd place in the Scrambler event this year. Louis has participated in Model UN and Mock Trial. He won the Class C state championship last year in slalom skiing and placed 3rd in giant slalom, and won both events this year. He has been captain of a southern Maine high school sailing team for the past two years. Louis plans to attend Bowdoin College.

Nate Hansen is the son of Moritz Hansen and Suzanne Fox of Falmouth. He is a recipient of the 2014 Dow Cup English Department Award and has received Community Service recognition. Nate is the founder and served as editor of the Waynflete Writers’ Guild literary magazine, and he was a member of the state second and third-place WorldQuest Trivia Competition team. He designed and carried out an independent study course to test a bio-marking mechanism for American eels to aid in a University of Southern Maine mark-recapture study. He has volunteered with the Maine Department of Marine Resources and Friends of Casco Bay. A four-year member of the Crew Team, he was captain this year. Nate plans to attend Stanford University.

 Matt Jarrell is the son of Mark and Darlene Jarrell of Portland. He is the recipient of the 2014 Josephine Detmer History Award. Matt has been a member of the Mock Trial team for four years, serving as captain this year. He has participated in Model UN, and was the recipient of the Distinguished Delegate Award at Maine Model UN in 2013. He was a founding member of the Waynflete Debate activity, as well as the state second and third-place WorldQuest Trivia Competition team. He has participated in Project Story Boost (reading to young children) and on various Admissions panels, has served as an Admissions Guide, and a math tutor. Matt is a four-year member of the Varsity Baseball team, having started on back-to-back Southwestern Conference title-winning teams. He will attend Brown University.

Sally Li is the daughter of Fei Li and Ma Dongping of Shenzhen, China. Sally is the recipient of the 2014 Margaret Chenery Math Award and she has received a Community Service Award. She was a member of the two-time state champion Science Olympiad team, as well as the two-time state champion LifeSmarts team. A member of the Math Team, Sally made the all-state Math teams twice. She also participated in the Science Bowl. She volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, and was a member of the Varsity Field Hockey team, earning All-State Honorable Mention this year. Sally plans to attend Bowdoin College.

Louise Lyall is the daughter of David Lyall and Blanche Belliveau of Saco. She has participated in Mock Trial as a captain, and both the Maine Model UN and Harvard Model UN, winning a Distinguished Delegate Award last year. Louise has volunteered at Maine Youth Court, a local historical society, the Portland Public Library, and at Reiche School. She was also a mentor for the Seventh Grade Girls Leadership program. She was a four-year member of the 2013 Class C championship Girls Varsity Basketball team and was named to the All-Academic Team this year. She has also participated on the Crew team and JV soccer. Louise will attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Wasita Mahaphanit is the daughter of Debbi and Wasin Mahaphanit of Portland. She is a recipient of the 2014 Dow Cup English Department Award, a Heather Brown Visual Arts Award, and the Linguistic Excellence Award. Wasita took part in the Maine College of Art pre-college summer program and the Champlain College Young Writer’s Workshop. She has been active in Habitat For Humanity, Twilight in the Park, Partners for World Health, and has volunteered at Maine Medical Center. She has been a dancer with the Portland Ballet and at Waynflete, and has been a member of Science Olympiad, the Science Bowl, Yearbook, the Waynflete Writers’ Guild, RAPS (a peer counseling program), and the Robotics Club. Wasita has also served as an Admissions Guide. She plans to attend Brown University.

Ellie Marston is the daughter of Chuck and Peggy Marston of Portland. She has received Community Service recognition. Ellie has been involved with Project Story Boost (reading to young children), Girls Leadership Training, RAPS (a peer counseling group), and Global Spotlight. She founded the Donate Life group at Waynflete and has volunteered in the Lower School teaching Spanish. Ellie has played the violin for 10 years. She was a member of USM’s Portland Youth Symphony for four years and was the 2013-2014 Concertmaster. She is a four-time participant in the Maine All-State Orchestra and a two-time member of the Maine Acoustic Festival. She has participated in Jazz Band and attended the Berklee Jazz Festival. Ellie has been captain of the Varsity Track team, was named to the All-Academic Team for cross country, and has participated in Varsity Field Hockey and JV Lacrosse. She plans to attend Boston College.

Sophie Raffel is the daughter of Kenneth Raffel and Claire Oppenheim of Portland . She is the 2014 recipient of the Barbara Freeman English Department Award and has received Community Service recognition. She was selected by Waynflete to attend the New England Young Writers Conference at Bread Loaf in 2011, was a member of Mock Trial for four years, serving as captain last year. She has been a four-year member of Model UN, winning individual Honorable Mention awards in 2012 and 2013, and was selected to participate in Harvard Model UN in 2011 and 2012. Sophie has been a volunteer with Maine Youth Court for two years, was a mentor of the Seventh Grade Girls Leadership program, and was a leader in RAPS (a peer counseling group). She has also been a volunteer at the Animal Refuge League for three years. Sophie has been a member of the Varsity Girls Soccer team for three years, serving as captain last year. She is a four-year Tennis team member, captain this year. She has also been a member of the Southwestern championship Swim team. Sophie plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania.

Jonathan Silin is the son of Steven Silin and Diane Lukac of South Freeport. Jonathan has participated in the National Security Language Initiative from the U.S. State Department to study the Chinese language, and pursued the study of East Asia through research with the East Asian Studies department at Bowdoin College. He has participated in Mock Trial for four years and was senior co-captain, Model UN for three years winning several awards at both the Maine Model UN and Harvard Model UN competitions. He has been the leader of the Current Events activity for two years, and was runner-up at the Maine State WorldQuest Trivia Competition. He has also participated in Project Story Boost (reading to young children) and has served as an Admissions Guide. Jonathan has been a member of the Varsity Soccer team and the Crew team. He plans to attend Dartmouth College.
