CAIRO (AP) — Demonstrations in Egypt by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi set off clashes Friday in which two people were killed and six wounded in Cairo, a local emergency official said.
The fighting in the northeastern al-Marg district, which involved fireworks and birdshot, was between Morsi supporters and local residents hostile to the Muslim Brotherhood from which he hails, according to a security official, who said police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. It was not clear whether the two killed were protesters or local residents.
Police meanwhile arrested at least 14 protesters in Cairo and the southern city of Minya, the security official said.
All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.
Friday’s confrontation comes nearly two weeks after President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi was sworn in. Islamist protesters oppose el-Sissi, who as army chief led the military ouster of Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, last July.
Muslim Brotherhood supporters have held regular protests since Morsi’s ouster, despite a sweeping crackdown that has seen hundreds of them killed in street clashes and thousands detained.
