Monhegan-inspired art at Thos. Moser

An art exhibition celebrating alumni from the 25-year-old Monhegan Artists’ Residency program is on display at the Thos. Moser Freeport showroom through Oct. 14. The show features 34 artists spanning 25 years since the program’s inception in 1989.

The Monhegan Artists’ Residency is a nonprofit organization that supports emerging visual artists and is designed to provide access to the artistic traditions and creative community on Monhegan Island, which is located off the midcoast of Maine. The program supplies living quarters, studio space, and a stipend for artists each year in the late spring, early summer and early fall. This year marks the 400th anniversary of explorer Capt. John Smith landing on the shores of Monhegan in 1614. For more than 100 years, Monhegan has been a summer haven for those who appreciate its isolation, wilderness and stark beauty. The island has inspired countless artists including Robert Henri, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Reuben Tam, Elena Jahn and Jamie Wyeth.

The Thos. Moser Freeport showroom and gallery is located at 149 Main St., and is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 865-4519 or visit www.thosmoser.com or www.monheganartistsresidency.org.

Humor writer offers inner-moose advice

Poulin’s character Ida is a lifelong resident of fictional Mahoosuc Mills, a familiar town in western Maine, where she lives in a tidy and tastefully decorated double-wide with high school sweetheart Charlie and dog Scamp. Most importantly, Ida is a daughter, sister, wife, and best friend who draws upon her experiences (as well as those of the noble and majestic moose) to offer advice on relationships, physical fitness, stress, housecleaning, work, shopping and more. The book is published by Yarmouth-based Islandport Press

Poulin created the character Ida LeClair in 1997. Poulin has been a leader in bringing a female voice to New England storytelling and humor, a genre historically dominated by men. Poulin has produced five stage shows featuring Ida: “Ida: Woman Who Runs with the Moose,” “Ida’s Havin’ a Yard Sale,” “A Very Ida Christmas,” “The Moose in Me, the Moose in You,” and her latest, “I Married an Alien.”

This will be a general information presentation for the community with a focus on prevention, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of infections caused by ticks and mosquitos and rashes caused by browntail moths.
