WEST BATH
The West Bath Fire Department has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Maine Municipal Association to purchase new safety equipment.
The grant will be used to purchase turnout gear, said West Bath Fire Chief Gregory Payson, referring to the fire-retardant protective outer clothing worn by firefighters.
Payson applied for the Safety Enhancement Grant in March and received notice of the award last week.
“We’re working to keep current with equipment,” said Payson, “and keep our guys safe.”
The grant is offered to members of the Maine Municipal Association Workers’ Compensation Fund, and is used “to purchase safety equipment or services that assist in reducing the frequency of and severity of workplace injuries,” a press release from the department stated.
Since 1999, the MMA has bestowed more than $3.2 million through the Safety Enhancement Grant program, funding a total of 2,527 grants as well as 366 scholarship grants.
